Five months since the release of Marvel’s Avengers : Age of Ultron many viewers are still confused about the cave scene with Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard). Thor makes a trip to the Water of Sight and takes a dip seeking answers after being troubled by Scarlet Witch’s vision. He sees vision of Ragnarok and the scene felt disjointed from the rest of the film.

We now know why as Marvel has released the deleted scene wherein Thor is possessed by the Norn and hauntingly rambles about the Infinity Stones. The scene was cut due to quite a few reasons runtime, test audiences and creative differences. The scene in the movie makes much more sense now after watching the extended scene. In the movie, Thor leaves Hawkeye’s farmhouse because he was disturbed by the visions he had under the spell of Scarlet Witch. He leaves for London where he asks Dr. Selvig to accompany and assist in a mission. We are then treated to scene where Thor enters a cave and has a vision of the Infinity Gauntlet.

When director Joss Whedon was asked on Empire Podcast why he cut the scene out, he replied,

“The original scene was that Thor went to speak to the Norn and how it would work was that he’d go in the pool and the Norn possess him, basically, and Erik Selvig asks all the questions, and the Norn, speaking through Thor, give the answers,” Whedon said. “So Chris got to do something different, and he really threw himself into it, and he did a beautiful job, but it wasn’t well regarded by the test audiences and I feel it’s probably largely because it was a rough cut with no effects, but also because it’s something that in a Thor movie would work brilliantly, but in this movie is just a little too left of centre.”
